Public Services Librarian Position Open

The Newton Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic applicant to fill the position of Public Services Librarian.  Our patrons are heavy users of traditional library services but are also adopters of new and emerging technologies. Library users look to the library as a trusted resource for instruction, technology, and support. The Public Services Librarian will design strategies that enhance services, improve the user experience, and promote programs that are tailored to the interests of not only our adult residents but of all residents of Jasper County and Iowa. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience managing change, supporting innovation, cultivating a positive outlook, and creating promoters of new services. Under the direction of the Library Director, responsibilities include but are not limited to: management of the reference department including a reference staff of 4, online databases, and print collection; assisting public with reference questions, basic technical inquiries, and computer needs; reader’s advisory; public relations and publicity; adult and family library programs; and related duties as assigned.  A comfortable, working knowledge of social media, downloadable books and music, and smart devices is necessary. We invite applicants to critique our library’s social media platforms and offer ideas on how to improve them along with user experience. This position requires a flexible schedule which includes evenings and weekends on rotation in support of public service hours. Qualifications:  MLS or MLIS from ALA accredited university or 4-year college or university degree with relevant coursework and experience of more than two years at a public library.  Beginning salary $50,548 with excellent benefit package.
