September is Library Card Sign-up Month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Newton Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all – a free library card.

Today’s libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where students can collaborate using new technologies, attend programs, or just relax with peers.  Newton Public Library offers access to books, magazines, newspapers, CDs and DVDs, Audiobooks, and Internet computers. The library also offers access to a variety of print and digital resources, including downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks through BRIDGES, downloadable music through www.freegalmusic.com, online databases such as Chilton Automotive Library, Explora Newspaper and Magazine Search, and Ancestry.com.

“Our library provides access and programs for patrons of all ages,” says Nicole Lindstrom, Public Services Librarian. “For preschool aged and toddler children we offer story times to encourage socialization and AWE Literacy Stations and iPads filled with interactive games for those children aged a bit older. For teens we offer crafts and programming along with their own reading and book section within the library. For adults we have Internet workstations available, lots of programming, and one-on-one tablet and eReader help with Librarians. There’s really something for everyone at the library and it’s all free with a library card.”

Throughout the course of the month, the library will host a number of activities, including a book mark contest for all ages, prize drawings for new card holders, and treats for our loyal readers whose accounts are in good standing. During September we will also be giving away an afghan handmade by Susan Beise, Technical Services Librarian, to the patron who can guess the closest number of physical books currently in the library collection on September 30th. You will also see the library out in the community, including the Farmer’s Market.

To sign up for a library card, stop in to the Newton Public Library with a valid I.D. and something else with your current address on it, like a piece of postage marked mail.  For more information on how to sign up for a library card or for events happening at the library, visit the Newton Public Library in person or website at www.newton.lib.ia.us.
